National 4-H Council
The 4-H Club taught Diane early in her life how to learn and how to teach. Growing up in Kansas on a farm with a large family involved in 4-H helped her develop her understanding of the land they farmed, the livestock they grew, and the processes and relationships required to succeed in rural America.
MCPS Educational Foundation
Diane spent her entire career in public schools, and close to three decades of that was in the Montgomery County Public School System of Maryland. She taught Kindergarten and 2nd Grade; was one of the county's first consulting teachers (eventually leading that program); and served as an educational consultant for both schools and private corporations long after leaving the classroom.
American Cancer Society
Diane was given an 18 month prognosis when first diagnosed with lung cancer; she instead chose to live for three years. Since her diagnosis she never stopped working full time; began the pursuit of and completed a master's degree certifying her to train teachers anywhere in the United States; became a grandmother; and spent her weekends going out to eat and to the movies with friends and family, up until 10 days before her passing. She chose to donate her body to medical research in hopes that even in death, science could continue to learn from her experiences with this illness and its treatments.
Please specify lung cancer on the gift form.
